The Latest in Vocabulary News

Here's a run-down of words and some Anjali-created signs.She is entering what Teresa calls the "Mockingbird Phase," in which she repeats as closely as possible anything she hears us say. :-) The following list only includes words she can come up with on her own, and not sounds that she simply repeats after us. She still uses a lot of signs, and is also incorporating the spoken word for some of the signs she uses.

Pockick - pocket
Pahtts - pants
Shuut (pronounced like "foot") - shirt (not very long ago, it was duut)
Dots - socks
Zip - zip (used to be tszitt)
Pahtties - panties (in a sing-song way)
Shih-shoot - swimsuit
Deet - feet
Toes (with a hard "t" - verging on "d") - toes
Pom - plum (lots of small fruits are plums these days)
Butch - peach
Moh ("more" with an English accent - haha!) - more. Often when I affirm that she wants more of a food, she smiles with her eyes closed as if very pleased, makes the "more" sign and says again, "Moh!"
Wet! - when Anjali or something else gets wet, and also water that you get in, like the tub or a pool or lake
Ow-shied - outside
Shuh-shine - sunshine
Wine - wine
Coppee - coffee
Teetee - TT
Shoop - Sup(erKate) (our friend Kate's nickname)
Fah-fah - Farhad
Poom - spoon (is used for both spoon and fork)
Copp - cup
Bah - ball
Diggie - Kitty (used for both cats)
Coco - a name for all chickens (one of our chickens is named Coco)
Pah-pee (same as Papi) - puppy (used for puppies and dogs)
Bye bye!
Nie-nie! (covering something with a napkin, blanket, etc.)
Moh-ning! - morning (as in, "good morning!")
Kick! - click (as in the noise a plastic buckle makes when it latches)
Boody-ummm - the sound a guitar or musical instrument makes, and also the noun referring to any such instrument
Book - book
Cock-ohm- popcorn
Mah-mahny (same as bag) - tamale
Tool - stool
Sit (a command/invitation) - sit
Austin rides a Vespa motorscooter. Any time Anjali sees a motorbike of any kind, she says, "Ah-tee," which the way she says his name.

Finger to the mouth and tilt head back - yogurt
Finger strikes across back of other hand - marker
Finger outlines lips - lipbalm
Finger into mouth and tilt head back - chip (such as tortilla)
Hugs herself and squeals, "Oooo!" - cold
Rubs her arm and says, "Mmmm!" - coconut oil, applied as lotion
