It's true; Anjali has lived through several Halloweens before this one, but this is the first we've celebrated. And what a magical, enchanting time we had! The Corvallis Waldorf School had a Halloween Festival. Seeking to avoid the horrific, and the sugar-laden aspects that our American culture adds to this holiday, I knew the Waldorf School's celebration would be a safe, wonder-filled party that ranked relatively low on the glycemic index. ;) Anjali picked out her own costume ~ all red with a pink tutu, and purple face. We went with the Short-Sauls family and met some of their friends whose children attend the school. We were treated to live fiddle-playing and singing, and homemade treats and cider while we waited to be led in small groups through the hallways of the school. The halls were lined with carved pumpkins lit with candles. Each of twenty or so rooms was decorated with a different scene. Several adults wearing costumes welcomed our small group into their little scene and slowly and quietly acted out a Mother Goose-type poem. Then they invited the children to have a treasure from their basket. The children stood in quiet awe as the stories unfolded.

Farmer woman telling her poem, with "pigs" peeking through the gate, children listening.
"Pigs" let out to eat their "slop."
"Spider" spinning in the night.
(I don't remember what this one was about, but I thought it was a pretty picture..)

Little Boy Blue, fast asleep.
Rapt attention with treasure bag in hand.
