In some cultures where the in-arms phase ~ of carrying and holding babies next to their bodies at all times ~ is considered of utmost importance, six months is seen as an important mile marker. Around this time a baby really starts making initiative to move about and explore on her own in a big way. In Bali, there is a celebration for babies on their six month anniversary. On that day for the first time, baby's feet are allowed to touch the ground. Though we didn't adhere to it quite that rigorously, six months feels like an important point.
We celebrated Anjali's six month day by an activity that I think is fitting ~ her first ride away from Mommy's or Papi's arm's reach in the bicycle trailer!
Berkeley has many folks dedicated to bicycles as alternative transportation. We see so many bicycling mommies and daddies with little ones in tow in some fashion. And there are "bicycle boulevards" woven throughout the town specifically devoted to bicycle traffic. They make riding safer and more peaceful.For our first ride as a family, we started out with breakfast on Fourth Street at Bette's Oceanview Diner.
Then we rode on the bikepath across the bridge to the marina.
There we walked all the way to the end of the pier and back. Then we played in a big patch of grass amidst many a barbecue and birthday party on a pleasant sunny spring Saturday.
This is where Anjali got her first sunburn. . Oops!! Wrong hat!
We rode home and spent the rest of the gorgeous day in the garden. 
For dinner Anjali was awake long enough to have a few spoonfuls of pureed carrot in beef broth, of which she highly approved.
Oh, what there is in store!
