Belly Dancing at the Park

Our friends Teresa (a.k.a. TT) and SuperKate were in Berkeley for the annual bellydance performance, called Devotion, that is now in its fourth year of production. Anjali attended with me this year, as she has in the past. This time she perched on my lap through the whole two-hour (with intermission) show, enrapt. Since it was a bellydance performance, there were many dancers in the audience. Whenever a piece would finish, or a performer would do something note-worthy, audience members would clap or "zaghareet" ~ the high-pitched trill that women make with their voices, behind their hand. Anjali would clap, and soon fell in singing, "Ay yah yah!" behind her hand. A treat for both daughter and mommy!
Bellydancing has been a key part of Anjali's play for a long time. This has given it nuance and renewed passion!
We went for an outing the other day to the "Duck Pond Park." Anjali just happened to have packed in her "pa-pack" harmonica, maraca, jingle bell bracelet, and finger cymbals (called zills), and the doll named Baby Girl. She pulled them out and directed us in our own bellydance performance right there in the shade. We switched off playing music and dancing. A rule that she made was that after a dancer finishes her piece, she announce it, and everyone else claps and zaghareets. Baby Girl and I played along.

I wanted to take photos of this precious time, but I didn't want to ruin the moment. I got a few shots.

Here she's having a bit of prop trouble, but it still captures some key aspects of the fun.
